About the Pig Latin Translator
Pig Latin is a playful word-game language used by English speakers, especially children. Words starting with a consonant cluster have that cluster moved to the end and "ay" appended. Words starting with a vowel get "way" appended.
This translator preserves capitalization, punctuation, and spacing, so paragraphs come out reading naturally. Translation runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
What are the rules of Pig Latin?
For words beginning with a consonant or consonant cluster, move those leading consonants to the end of the word and add "ay" — so "pig" becomes "igpay" and "string" becomes "ingstray". For words starting with a vowel, simply append "way" — so "apple" becomes "appleway".
Does this preserve punctuation?
Yes — only alphabetic words are translated. Punctuation, numbers, and spacing are left untouched, and capitalization (first-letter or ALL CAPS) is preserved on the translated word.
Where does Pig Latin come from?
Pig Latin has nothing to do with Latin. It's an English-language argot that dates back to at least the 1800s and was popularized as a children's secret language in the early 20th century. The "Latin" tag refers to its mock-foreign sound.
